Establishing a Privacy Officer Function Within a Justice or Public Safety Entity: Recommended Responsibilities and Training

The function of a privacy officer for a justice or public safety agency is to manage the policies and procedures of the entity as it handles and protects personally identifiable information (PII) and other sensitive information. This is a critical role, since a privacy officer can play a proactive role in helping to prevent privacy-related problems and avoid further problems, thus saving expense in the future. For example, if there is a complaint regarding a breach of PII, the privacy officer can step in to help evaluate, educate, and manage the issue and help ensure that appropriate procedures are followed in addressing the complaint.
